All Neschen filmoplast tapes employ adhesives that are both acid and solvent-free and will not dry out or become brittle with age. It should be noted however that despite our products outstanding aging properties they should not be construed as being a direct replacement for traditional conservation hinges made from wheat paste and rice paper.
When used for hinging artworks filmoplast tapes should only be applied to the artworks blank border areas and not to areas directly behind the image or so called “bleed images”. We recommend as a general rule of practice that you carefully read all manufacturer’s instructions and if in doubt contact the manufacturer or a trained conservator. As a member of the American Institute for Conservation Neschen would be happy to assist you in finding a trained conservator your area.
Originally designed for mending tears in library and archive materials filmoplast P has found favor in the fine art framing world as a means to hinge works done on lightweight papers. With no wetting required there is no risk of the paper cockling and as the tape is transparent after burnishing the hinges will not shadow through. Both the adhesive and paper used are acid free and have been additionally buffered with CaCO3 so they remain acid-free.
filmoplast« P 90
filmoplast P 90 is made from a white, tear resistant paper and coated with Neschen’s own age resistant acrylic adhesive. filmoplast P 90 is widely used to hinge those works of art that do not warrant wheat paste and rice paper hinges. Both the adhesive and paper are buffered (pH 8.7 aged) so the tape remains acid-free for decades after application. Like all pressure sensitive tapes filmoplast P 90 should be burnished upon application with a clean bone folder to achieve the optimum bonding strength.
filmoplast« P 90 plus
New to the filmoplast line is the filmoplast P 90 Plus in the new blue box. While most other filmoplast tapes were first designed for archives use the filmoplast P 90 Plus has been specifically designed for fine art hinging. The adhesive used is a refined version of the original providing better initial as well as final bond strength while retaining the same stable aging characteristics.
Known as a “heat-set tissue” filmoplast R is a high alpha-cellulose content tissue coated with an acid and solvent-free heat activated adhesive. Used primarily to line brittle documents to prevent further disintegration filmoplast R is an ideal treatment for newspaper clippings and other paper memorabilia. Buffered with magnesium carbonate to a pH of 9.6 filmoplast R will neutralize those acids found in the original document as they migrate into the adhesive. The adhesive activates at a temperature of 110║C and can be applied with an iron or heat press.
